How do we teach?

Our unique and successful teaching method is based on four basic principals. Here we will try to direct you, the teacher, how to practically apply our system. It should be clear that new teachers in our school go through tens of hours of hands on training before being given reign of a classroom. Additionally, even our veteran teachers are closely supervised on a regular basis. It should therefore be clear that the following information is a basis to comprehend how our system works, and proper hands-on training is also necessary to execute the system properly.

  1. Material

The material we teach is all based on חז"ל and therefore a good educational fit for the students. During the first three grades the main subject studied is Chumash based on what it says in the Mishnah ''בן חמש שנים למקרא'' . Following the completion of Chumash, the children are taught נביאים and כתובים. At the age of ten we start teaching Mishna with the hope of completing close to all of Mishna by the end of 8th grade, as we are taught "בן עשר למשנה". In the Yeshiva level starting in 9th grade the main subject learnt is Gemora, being taught with an emphasis on Halacha. The material taught at every given age is best suited for the students and ultimately gives them the greatest level of satisfaction and accomplishment.

  2. Understanding

A great amount of emphasis is put on choosing the proper פשט. We take effort to train our teachers to be able to desire on their own what is the most comprehensive and easy to understand explanation at every level. First and foremost to understand the simple meaning of what is written. And then to comprehend its implication on a practical level. We avoid teaching מדרש when learning מקרא and complicated commentaries on Mishnah and Gemara. This enables to students to best comprehend and retain the material.

  3. Student participation

Unlike most classrooms, where the majority of time the teacher is lecturing to the class constantly challenging their patience we follow the 80-20 method. Giving the students the majority of time to participate in the classroom and ultimately avoid education's biggest challenge, boredom.

  4. Review

Our review system is divided into several categories. Firstly, during the initial learning stage the material is reviewed between 10 and 15 times. During the next two weeks that material is reviewed an additional 10-15 times. Throughout the year there is a constant review of previously learnt material including all that was learned from 1st grade and on. Our students in High School are still reviewing what they learned years ago. The expression to know means to retain that was learnt. This gives the students an amazing sense of accomplishment and drive to go further with their studies. What we refer to as the wave of success. And since all of תנ''ך is learnt with the original טעמים and Mishna with a traditional tune it allows for very pleasant review.

For any detailed explanations on any part of what we have discussed please contact us personally. We also receive every year teachers from all over the world at our school to get hands on training. To arrange this, be in touch with us directly.

The following pages are examples of explanations of text given to the students at the end of each week along with tests and other teaching material.
